[The Meritorious Deed and Virtue of Pioneering a Dojang]

Sangjenim one day revealed to the disciples, “My work is like that of a wandering vagabond. Long ago, this person lived his life prodigally, irresolute of will and principle, but one day thought to himself, ‘I have accomplished nothing in my life as the years passed by without any meaning. Now that I have grown old, how could I not be filled with regret? Henceforth, I shall reform myself and seek an immortal to learn the ways of immortality.’

“So, the vagabond prepared an altar in a place both serene and unsullied, then began praying to heaven with utmost devotion. Then one day, his soul suddenly ascended to heaven, and there he encountered an immortal, who said to him, ‘I commend you, for you have expressed regret for your unruly life and wish to learn the ways of immortality. I shall indeed teach you these very ways of immortality. Build a dojang on a modest plot of land, gather a host of fellow seekers, and await me there. I shall then seek you out and reveal to you the dao of immortality.’

“The man acquired a small plot of land and, from that day onward, began searching for fellow seekers. Many were suspicious of his prodigal past, and very few listened to him at all. In spite of this, a small group who had shared common interests with him gathered and founded a dojang. Suddenly, the immortal descended amidst resounding celestial music and clouds of every hue, and he taught them the ways of immortality.”
