Dongui Bogam_09_Essence, Qi, and the Spirit

[保養精氣神]
[The Maintenance and Nurturing of Essence, Qi, and the Spirit]

臞仙曰, 精者身之本, 氣者神之主, 形者神之宅也. 故神太用則歇, 精太用則竭, 氣太勞則絶. 是以人之生者神也. 
形之托者氣也. 若氣衰則形耗, 而欲長生者未之聞也. 夫有者因無而生焉. 形者須神而立焉. 
Quxian (臞仙) once said, 
"Essence(精) is the origin of the body, qi(氣) is the master of the spirit, and body(形) is the shelter of the spirit. 
Therefore, the spirit(神) becomes exhausted if the spirit is overused, 
the essence(精) dries out if the essence is overused, 
and gi(氣) is depleted if qi is overused. 
The base of the life of the human is the spirit, and the body relies on qi. 
The body is consumed when qi is depleted; in such a case, the person cannot live long. 

有者無之舘, 形者神之宅也. 倘不全宅以安生, 修身以養神, 則不免於氣散歸空, 遊魂爲變. 方之於燭, 燭盡則火不居. 
譬之於堤, 堤壞則水不存矣.
Something is the shelter of nothing; shape is the shelter of spirit. 
If one does not protect this shelter and make it comfortable, 
and if one does not cultivate the spirit by training the body, 
qi will scatter and the spirit will roam away. 
It is the same logic as the candlelight unable to glow when the candle is burned out, 
and the water unable to remain in one place when the dike has broken. 

夫魂者陽也. 魄者陰也. 神能服氣, 形能食味. 氣淸則神爽, 形勞則氣濁. 服氣者, 千百不死, 故身飛於天. 
食穀者, 千百皆死, 故形歸於地. 
The ethereal soul(魂) is yang and the corporeal soul(魄) is yin. 
The spirit feeds on qi and shape feeds on flavors; 
the spirit(神) becomes bright when qi(氣) is clear, 
and gi(氣) becomes cloudy when the shape(形) is tired. 
Anyone who takes in gi does not die, hence his or her body is light enough to fly the sky; 
anyone who takes in food eventually dies, hence his or her shape returns to the earth. 

人之死也, 魂飛於天, 魄落於泉, 水火分散, 各歸本源, 生則同體, 死則相損, 飛沈各異, 稟之自然. 譬如一根之木, 以火焚之,
 烟則上升, 灰則下沈, 亦自然之理也. 
When a person dies, the ethereal soul flies to heaven and the corporeal soul sinks into the earth; 
this is the way of Fire and Water going back to their origins. 
They stay together during life, and they part at the time of death 
for one to return to heaven and for the other to sink into the earth; this is very natural. 
It is the same natural logic as the tree burned and smoke floating upwards and the ashes falling downwards. 

夫神明者生化之本, 精氣者萬物之體, 全其形則生, 養其精氣則性命長存矣.
The bright spirit(神明) is the origin of the transformation, 
and essence qi(精氣) is the frame of all things; 
so one lives if the shape(形) is maintained, 
and life(性命) is maintained for a long time if one nurtures one's essence qi.
