The Taeeulju Mantra

The Taeeulju Mantra brings serenity to the mind and spirit and to the heavenly soul and the earthly soul, allowing one to experience the resplendence of the holy spirits and communion with the spirit realm. It is the mantra that will save the world’s people.

The Taeeulju Mantra, 태을주 (太乙呪): Composed of twenty-three words, the Taeeulju Mantra is Jeung San Do’s most important mantra. It is the mantra of salvation, for it will be used to deliver humanity from the mysterious disease during the three years of the Autumn Gaebyeok. Moreover, within the mantra lies the blessing and grace of resolving the deep bitterness and grief of one’s ancestors and bringing them salvation during the Autumn Gaebyeok. 

[Encountering Gim Gyeong-su]
1Gim Gyeong-su of Hampyeong County vowed to heaven and earth, “I will without fail accomplish a noble purpose through fifty years of dao practice.” He then immersed himself within this practice.

2Forty-nine years passed. Only then did Gim Gyeong-su attain a divine revelation in which he received the Taeeulju Mantra and foresaw the arrival of Maitreya Buddha’s Dragon Flower Paradise.

3Afterward, Gyeong-su often visited Geumsansa Temple, the fount of Maitreya faith, to pray for the advent of Maitreya Buddha and the salvation of all beings. 4One day, Gyeong-su by chance encountered Jeung-san at Geumsansa Temple. He greeted Jeung-san, and they spoke at length.

[Jeung-san Receives the Taeeulju Mantra from Gim Gyeong-su]
5Many days later, Jeung-san summoned Gim Gyeong-su, and he arrived in Gaengmang-ri Village later that day.

6While eating an evening meal prepared by his wife, Lady Jeong, Jeung-san conversed about dao with Gyeong-su. 7It was at this time that Gyeong-su presented the Taeeulju Mantra to Jeung-san by chanting it for him.

[The Sixty-Year Devotion and Virtue of Ancestral Spirits]
1“It takes infinite dedication for heaven to beget a human being,2and thus ancestral spirits devote more than sixty years to the receiving of a single worthy descendant from heaven, yet many spirits still do not succeed in receiving any such descendants.3How can you—the culmination of such arduous labors—spend your fleeting dream of a life in vain?4You must cherish the devotion and virtue of your ancestral spirits.5When ancestral spirits successfully receive a single worthy descendant through their devotion, they dance with joy.”

[The Disease Will Cull the World’s People]
1“In the future, the world will be cleansed by a disease.2All who have iniquitous minds will die, for the disease will cull the world’s people.”

The Taeeulju Mantra Will Deliver the World’s People
3“The Taeeulju Mantra will deliver the world’s people.4The disease will be conquered only by the Taeeulju Mantra.

5“The Taeeulju Mantra is a mantra of creation-transformation that expels the demon of disease and thus defeats all diseases.6The Taeeulju Mantra heals all illnesses; the Taeeulju Mantra is the wish-fulfilling jewel.7The Taeeulju Mantra delivers humanity and proclaims the teachings across the world. Therefore, chant the Taeeulju Mantra countless times.

8“The Taeeulju Mantra is the mantra for storing water qi.9The Taeeulju Mantra is the milk of the mother—the milk of heaven and earth—so those who do not chant the Taeeulju Mantra will all die.

10“The Taeeulju Mantra is the yullyeo of the universe.”

[I Have Been Sowing My Seeds for Three Thousand Years]
1Sangjenim one day revealed to Nae-seong, “I have been sowing my seeds for three thousand years.”2He continued, “In the coming times, the Yin Dosu will be so lofty that momentous endeavors will never be accomplished with yang alone.”

[Nae-seong Is Conferred the Yullyeo Dosu]
3Sangjenim also commanded, “Nae-seong, you must chant the Taeeulju Mantra countless times.4You must become the mother of my dao.” With this, Sangjenim conferred the Shaman Dosu upon Nae-seong.

5Moreover, Sangjenim conferred the Cheonmaek Dosu upon Gyeong-seok, the Yullyeo Dosu upon Nae-seong, the Dosu for the School of Great Learning upon Gyeong-hak, and the Samsin Dosu upon Chang-jo.

* Shaman Dosu.   무당도수. A shaman is a spiritual person who mediates between the human world and spirit world. The Taeeulju Mantra underlies this dosu, and Ahn Nae-seong, who was conferred this dosu, will mediate between the human world and Taeeulcheon Heaven to help humanity become reborn as ultimate ones (who are one with heaven and earth) in the Later Heaven. 

* Cheonmaek Dosu.   천맥도수 (阡陌度數). Cheonmaek are the vertical and horizontal paths that separate a field into rice paddies. Cheon signifies a south-north direction, and maek signifies an east-west orientation. This dosu suggests that Sangjenim’s truth will blaze pathways in all directions without any impediment until it reaches across the world. Hence, this dosu represents the spreading of his dao and the vast organization that carries it out 


Gim Hyeong-ryeol’s Dosu of an Immortal, and Gim Ja-hyeon’s Healer Dosu
1Sangjenim conferred upon Hyeong-ryeol the Dosu of an Immortal and conferred upon Ja-hyeon the Healer Dosu.

2Sangjenim urged Hyeong-ryeol, “Erect a child buddha statue and guard Geumsansa Temple.3Is there truly anyone but you who would not feel bitterness and grief if they died while guarding Geumsansa Temple and became a spirit? Thus, it is you who must be the one to resolutely guard Geumsansa Temple.”

4In conferring the Healer Dosu upon Ja-hyeon, Sangjenim asked him, “Would you rather be known as ‘a renowned healer of the world’ or as ‘a renowned healer of Joseon’? You would, of course, rather be known as ‘a renowned healer of the world.’5Indeed, resolve to save others—devote yourself to benevolent deeds without accepting money and convey the teachings.”

6After Sangjenim’s ascension, Hyeong-ryeol watched over Geumsansa Temple and there conveyed the teachings. Ja-hyeon, however, journeyed throughout the country and saved many people by healing them, never accepting compensation.

I Have Gathered the Qi of All Medicine into the Taeeulju Mantra
7Sangjenim one day declared, “The Taeeulju Mantra is the mantra that expels the demon of disease.8Since I have gathered the qi of all medicine into the Taeeulju Mantra, the Taeeulju Mantra vanquishes all illnesses.”

The Taeeulju Mantra Is Medicine for the Time of Gaebyeok
1“Sin-nong saved many lives by tasting a hundred herbs to devise medicine,2but we will save countless lives throughout the world by chanting the Taeeulju Mantra.

3“Disease will not trespass within you, for the Taeeulju Mantra is the mantra for storing water qi.4I have gathered the qi of all medicine into the Taeeulju Mantra. The Taeeulju Mantra is medicine.”

* The Taeeulju Mantra is medicine.  The Taeeulju Mantra is the sole medicine that will deliver humanity at the time of the Autumn Gaebyeok. 


[A Major Work of Renewal for Granting the Taeeulju Mantra for Humanity’s Salvation at the Time of Gaebyeok]
1Sangjenim one day declared, “After conducting an offering ritual to Sin-nong, I will proclaim the Taeeulju Mantra to the world.”

2On a later day, Sangjenim came to Ahn Nae-seong’s house and commanded him, “Offer a feast to heaven and earth this day.”3He continued, “Prepare three tables of food and present to me an offering of three hundred nyang.”

4Nae-seong, who was very poor, expressed his worry to his mother, “Mother, my Teacher has required an offering of three hundred nyang, but I do not even have a single coin. What should I do?”

5“We do not have such a large sum,” his mother replied, “but I have been saving small sums in a pot. Take it out and count it.”

6Nae-seong counted the money and found only three hundred nip. He then informed Sangjenim, “All I have is three hundred nip.”

7“I will use the three hundred nip in place of the three hundred nyang,” Sangjenim replied. “Bring it to me quickly.”8When Nae-seong brought the money, Sangjenim ordered, “Use this three hundred nip to buy rice wine.”

9Nae-seong purchased a huge pot of rice wine at a nearby inn and carried it home on his wooden backpack himself, though the load was so heavy that even a strong young man would have had difficulty carrying it.10Nae-seong and his mother prepared the tables for the offering, laying out seasoned vegetable dishes and cooked barley.
Sangjenim instructed, “Offer an equal amount of rice wine on each of the three tables and then prostrate yourself and pray in your heart.” 11While Nae-seong was prostrating himself toward the tables, Sangjenim seated himself at the middle table and ate the food from the offering.

12A while later, Sangjenim proclaimed, “Receive the Taeeulju Mantra. This mantra embodies all the world’s sustenance and blessings, life and longevity.” 13With this, Sangjenim chanted the Taeeulju Mantra to Nae-seong seven times, then had him repeat the chant.

Sangjenim Confers the Yullyeo Dosu upon Ahn Nae-seong
14Sangjenim then declared to Nae-seong, “You are now the wife of my dao. You are the only one upon whom I confer the Taeeulju Mantra. Chant the Taeeulju Mantra countless times. 15You must convey the Taeeulju Mantra to the world. The Taeeulju Mantra is the yullyeo of the universe.”

16He also said, “Dig, dig, dig deeply. You will die if you dig shallowly, so you must dig deeper and ever deeper.”

17Sangjenim conferred the Yullyeo Dosu upon Nae-seong. It was in obedience to Sangjenim’s mandate that Nae-seong would later chant the Taeeulju Mantra with one mind without rising from his seat for three years.

* Sin-nong.   신농 (神農). The father of Eastern medicine. See footnote in 1:11:2.

* nip.   닢. The smallest currency in Joseon at the time. One hundred nip equaled one nyang. 

* yullyeo.   율려 (律呂). Heaven and earth’s yin and yang in their pure state (i.e., the substance of the universe’s yin and yang). It is the source of the movement and stillness that create and nurture all existence. Yul (pure yang) animates all existence, and lyeo (pure yin) brings it to fruition and rest. 


Sangjenim Confers upon Ahn Nae-seong the Lineage of Immortality Through the Taeeulju Mantra
1Sangjenim one day said to Ahn Nae-seong, “Nae-seong! You are now the wife of My dao, and I am your husband.”

2Sangjenim continued, “You must assume the role of the mother of My dao. Moaksan Mountain has the shape of a mother cradling a baby, does it not?3Babies live on their mothers’ milk, so you shall convey the Taeeulju Mantra to the world’s people.4To chant the Taeeulju Mantra is to suckle from the breast of heaven and earth, so those who do not chant it will not survive the time of gaebyeok.5The raising of children requires a mother, and so you must be the first to chant the Taeeulju Mantra and hence serve as the mother of My dao.”

The Sukguji Dosu Concerning Salvation at the Time of the Later Heaven Gaebyeok
1Jeon Tae-il of Sukguji Village in Taein County visited Gong-u in Unsan-ri Village and related to him,2“I was devotedly chanting the Sicheonjuju Mantra, when an ancient man came to me one day and said, ‘If you wish to find a place of life and prosperity, journey twenty ri to the south.’ And so I journeyed here.”

3Gong-u brought Tae-il before Sangjenimin Guritgol Village and related Tae-il’s story to Sangjenim, who then wrote something upon a sheet of paper and presented this paper to Tae-il.4Upon returning home, Tae-il unfolded the paper and discovered that Sangjenim had written upon it the Taeeulju Mantra.

5Tae-il recited the mantra that evening, and everyone in Sukguji Village—men and women, young and old—soon began reciting the mantra, following Tae-il’s example.

6The next day, Tae-il returned to Sangjenim and reported what had happened.7Sangjenim replied, “Such is the dosu assigned to Mun Gong-sin. Sukguji signifies ‘counting the number.’ I have established this counting of the total number for what is to come.8However, since the time is not yet ripe, I am withdrawing the qi of Sukguji.”

9Sangjenim then wrote upon a wall in the medicine room:

氣東北而固守 理西南而交通
기동북이고수 이서남이교통
East and north, the qi holds fast.
West and south, the principles interchange.

Afterward, Sangjenim went outside the medicine room, drew a talisman on a large flat rock in the yard, and then marked dots.10He wrote the Taeeulju Mantra and the name “Gim Gyeong-su” on a sheet of paper and pasted it to the flat rock. After completing a prostration in the direction of the paper, Sangjenim proclaimed, “I have received this mantra from Gim Gyeong-su.”

* Jeon Tae-il.   전태일 (全泰一). 1861–? (Jeon, “pure” “complete”; tae, “ultimate” “great”; il, “one.”) One of Sangjenim’s disciples. Jeon Tae-il’s name signifies ‘the ultimate one who is one with heaven and earth’ or ‘the human being of the Later Heaven.’ 

* Sukguji Village.  숙구지 (宿狗地). “Sleeping Dog Village.” 

* Unsan-ri Village.   운산리 (雲山里). “Cloud Mountain Village.” 


[Make Use of the Taeeulju Mantra]
1Next, Sangjenim placed a knife, a writing brush, an ink stick, and a fan on the flat rock and had each disciple choose the item they desired.2Ryu Chan-myeong chose the knife; Gim Hyeong-ryeol, the fan; Gim Ja-hyeon, the ink stick; and Han Gong-suk, the writing brush.

3Sangjenim then had each of the four disciples sit in a different corner inside the medicine room. Standing in the center, Sangjenim recited, “Two-seven-six, nine-five-one, four-three-eight.” 4He then had three of the disciples cut paper into the shape of money bills and fill an inkstone case with them.

5In accordance with Sangjenim’s instructions, one of these three disciples picked out one of these papers and announced, “Deng Yu,” then passed the paper to another disciple.6That disciple also announced, “Deng Yu” and passed the paper to another,7who also repeated the name. Together, the three intoned, “The Commander of China.”

8The three disciples repeated this process, this time announcing the name “Ma Cheng” and finally intoning, “The Commander of Japan.”9Next, they announced the name “Wu Han” and at the end intoned, “The Commander of Joseon.”10They repeated this process until assignments had been conferred upon all Twenty-Eight Generals as well as the Twenty-Four Generals and no more pieces of paper remained in the inkstone case.

11Tae-il returned to his village. Several days later, he again visited Sangjenim and reported that the villagers no longer chanted the Taeeulju Mantra.

12On another occasion, Sangjenim commanded the disciples, “Make use of the Taeeulju Mantra. 13If you post the Taeeulju Mantra above your door, the soldier spirits will recognize your house as a house of dao and pass by without invading it.”

* Two-seven-six... four-three-eight.   These numbers are from Nakseo, the Luo River Diagram. 

* Deng Yu.  등우 (鄧禹). One of the Twenty-Eight Generals, who aided Guangwu Di in founding China’s Later Han Dynasty (25–220 CE). 

* Ma Cheng.   마성 (馬成). One of the Twenty-Eight Generals. 

* Wu Han.   오한 (吳漢). One of the Twenty-Eight Generals. 


[A Heavenly Mandate for Conveying Mantras to Spread the Teachings]
1In the spring of 1909, while in Guritgol Village, Sangjenim sat His disciples in a circle, wrote the Jinaekju Mantra on a sheet of paper, then gave this written mantra to a disciple and had him chant it.2Sangjenim then commanded him, “Convey the mantra to ten thousand people.”3After receiving the disciple’s pledge to do so, Sangjenim had him convey the written mantra to another disciple and instruct this disciple to chant it, continuing in this manner from one disciple to the next.

A Work of Renewal for the Initiation Ceremony
4When Gim Seok was being initiated into Sangjenim’s dao, in Jeonju County, Sangjenim positioned Gwang-chan and Hyeong-ryeol at Seok’s left and right,5placed a bowl of cheongsu before them, and had all three perform the embracing-heaven-and-caressing-earth prostration four times toward the cheongsu.6He then ordered the two disciples to recite the Taeeulju Mantra twenty-one times in the manner of monks chanting7and then had Gim Seok do the same.

[The Taeeulju Mantra: The Mark of Sustenance for Gaining New Life]
1One day during His work of renewal, Sangjenim wrote out the Taeeulju Mantra and asked the disciples, “What does the mantra’s shape suggest to you?”
“The shape reminds me of a spoon,” Gap-chil replied.

2“I shall intermingle the East and West like bibimbap,” Sangjenim declared, “and you will partake of it with this spoon.3The Taeeulju Mantra is the spoon of sustenance for the Later Heaven.4Those who chant the Taeeulju Mantra are those who are blessed with the destiny of fifty thousand years.”

5Sangjenim continued, “The Taeeulju Mantra, shaped like a spoon, is the mark of sustenance.6If this mark is posted on your houses, the spirits of the mysterious disease will recognize your homes as houses of dao and refrain from trespassing within.”

7Sangjenim one day had the disciples chant the Taeeulju Mantra, then proclaimed, “The Taeeulju Mantra flows with the milk of the mother—of heaven and earth—so do not forsake this flow of heaven and earth’s milk.”

8Sangjenim continued, “If a tree is not rooted into the ground, how can the tree grow luxuriantly even though the sky bestows upon it rain and dew?9If a baby refuses its mother’s milk and does not suckle, how can the child hope to live?”

[Hoom-Chi Is the Sound of Calling Out to Heaven and Earth]
1“Hoom-chi is the sound of calling out to the parents, heaven and earth.2It is the sound of humanity calling out to God like a calf lowing to its mother.

3“The Taeeulju Mantra must be chanted to find your roots.4The Taeeulju Mantra is a mantra for receiving water qi.”

The Sound of the Taeeulju Mantra Echoes Throughout Heaven and Earth
5“I descended into this world to conduct My work concerning humanity, and thus the female immortals in heaven received the Taeeulju Mantra after humanity did so.6The sound of female immortals chanting the Taeeulju Mantra as they water their flower gardens echoes throughout heaven and earth.

7“You must chant and chant again until the Taeeulju Mantra overflows your mouth.”

Resist Sleep and Chant the Taeeulju Mantra
1“Resist the onrush of sleep and chant the Taeeulju Mantra countless times.2Taeeulcheon Sangwongun is the most sovereign emperor of heaven, and so the Taeeulju Mantra shall be chanted in every village and in every school for fifty thousand years.3The Taeeulju Mantra embodies the Yullyeo Dosu.4The practice of chanting the Taeeulju Mantra is the practice of becoming an immortal.”

The Taeeulju Mantra Is the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel

The Taeeulju Mantra resolves all hindrances.

萬病通治 太乙呪
만병통치 태을주
The Taeeulju Mantra vanquishes all illnesses.

所願成就 太乙呪
소원성취 태을주
The Taeeulju Mantra fulfills all wishes.

布德天下 太乙呪
포덕천하 태을주
The Taeeulju Mantra proclaims the teachings throughout the world.

廣濟蒼生 太乙呪
광제창생 태을주
The Taeeulju Mantra delivers the world’s people.

萬事如意 太乙呪
만사여의 태을주
The Taeeulju Mantra actualizes all that is willed.

無窮無窮 太乙呪
무궁무궁 태을주
The Taeeulju Mantra’s power of creation-transformation
is boundless and eternal.

The Taeeulju Mantra is the wish-fulfilling jewel.
The wish-fulfilling jewel is the Taeeulju Mantra.

* Taeeulcheon Sangwongun.   태을천 상원군 (太乙天 上元君). In the spirit realm of the universe, Taeeulcheon (or Taeeulcheon Heaven) is the ultimate heaven—the root of dao and life—and Taeeulcheon Sangwongun is the Lord of this heaven. Taeeulcheon Sangwongun (or the Taeeul God) is the ancestor of all buddhas and immortals. By faithfully chanting the Taeeulju Mantra, which derives its name from Taeeulcheon and its Lord, the practitioner can open themselves to the spirit realm and receive the qi of heaven and earth’s power of creation-transformation. 


[The Dao of Spreading the Teachings, the Dosu of the Succession of the Vanguards of Six]
1“All who believe in Me shall convey My teachings to six people.2The dao of spreading the teachings is to first form a vanguard of six, and then each vanguard member conveys the teachings to form another vanguard of six, until eventually all the world is thus encompassed. This is the succession of conveying My teachings.”

A Heavenly Mandate to Form Vanguards of Six
3One day, Sangjenim said to Ryu Chan-myeong and Gim Ja-hyeon, “You should each convey My teachings to one hundred thousand people.”4Chan-myeong pledged to do so, but Ja-hyeon remained silent. Sangjenim pressed Ja-hyeon for a response, and finally he also pledged to do so.

5Sangjenim then proclaimed, “It is I who bring order to the world, and it is you who shall govern it. Governing the world shall require a fifty-year practice.”

Fulfilling the Heavenly Mandate Through the Taeeulju Mantra
6One day, Sangjenim declared, “The world’s people shall be delivered by the Taeeulju Mantra. It is through the Taeeulju Mantra that the heavenly mandate will be fulfilled.”

[The Power of the Taeeulju and Unjangju Mantras]
1Sangjenim one day revealed to the disciples, “I have tested the power of the Taeeulju Mantra and the Unjangju Mantra, so you must chant them at all times.2I have resolved Gim Byeong-uk’s tribulation with the Taeeulju Mantra, and I have resolved the Jang Hyo-sun uproar with the Unjangju Mantra.3Even should one commit treason, the Taeeulju Mantra will open the gate of their prison;4even should one be convicted of murder, the Unjangju Mantra will open the gate of their prison.”

The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Dosu Is the Taeeulju Mantra
5“The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Dosu is the Taeeulju Mantra, for the mantra resolves all hindrances and actualizes all that is willed.6Hoom-chi is the sound of calling out to the Father and the Mother. The Yullyeo Dosu is the Taeeulju Mantra.7The Taeeulju Mantra is the mantra of finding your roots, and it is the mantra of resolving your ancestral spirits’ bitterness and grief and fulfilling their wishes.”

The Reawakening of Gim Gyeong-hak’s Faith
1Even after the chiseong at Geumsansa Temple, the disciples still felt bewildered and lacked a sense of purpose, so they journeyed throughout the land in search of another teacher like Sangjenim.2Like the others, Gyeong-hak wandered in search of a teacher, and he finally returned home in February 1910 (DG 40),3only to discover that his elderly mother had just died from a sudden illness and that his family were busily preparing implements for the funeral.

4Gyeong-hak cried out in the yard, “Since I have been following an incomparable divine being, I have failed to even keep vigil during my mother’s final hour of passing.”5While he was wailing mournfully, Gyeong-hak remembered Sangjenim’s words, ‘Multitudes shall be saved through the Taeeulju Mantra,’6and so he immediately collected himself and entered the room where his mother had been laid to rest. After sending his family out of the room, he prayed to Sangjenim and chanted the Taeeulju Mantra with utmost devotion. As he did so, his elderly mother suddenly returned to life.

7From that time forth, whenever people become ill, Gyeong-hak took it upon himself to seek them out and heal them by chanting the Taeeulju Mantra. Word began to spread to all four directions: ‘Gyeong-hak has become a divine healer.’

The Beginning of Conveying the Teachings Through the School of Great Learning Dosu
1During this period, Ryu Ui-gyeong of Notjeom-ri Village was nearing death from typhoid fever, and his family members rushed to Gyeong-hak and begged him to save Ui-gyeong’s life.2Gyeong-hak went to their house in the evening, and after offering a bowl of cheongsu, he prayed to Sangjenim and chanted the Taeeulju Mantra. Ui-gyeong’s dire condition thus improved, and he was completely cured in a matter of days.

3Afterward, Ui-gyeong inquired of Gyeong-hak about the principle that underlay the curing of a terrible disease through mantra chanting.4Gyeong-hak explained to Ui-gyeong about Sangjenim’s divinity and that Sangjenim was the Lord of Creation-Transformation who renewed heaven and earth, and so it was that Gyeong-hak guided Ui-gyeong to the path of faith.

5Soon after, Gyeong-hak and Ui-gyeong journeyed together to the Maitreya Shrine of Geumsansa Temple and offered a chiseong. Thereafter, they traveled to the medicine room in Guritgol Village and, sojourning several days, visited sites significant to Sangjenim’s work.6During this time, Gyeong-hak noticed a crisscross cut in the wallpaper on one side of the medicine room.7Puzzled by the sight, he peeled away the paper from this four-edged cut and discovered the character for sun (日) written approximately a foot tall.

Uphold the Mandate to Spread the Supreme Dao of Mugeuk
8A few days later, Gyeong-hak revisited the medicine room, reexamined its interior, and discovered another crisscross cut in the wallpaper above the lintel of the eastern doorway.9He peeled away the paper and discovered five characters written horizontally that read, “Uphold the mandate to spread the Supreme Dao of Mugeuk (十奉命開訓).”

10The night Ui-gyeong returned home, he offered a bowl of cheongsu and chanted the Taeeulju Mantra, and his spiritual eye opened and numerous miracles ensued. 11Thereafter, word spread far and wide that ‘chanting the Taeeulju Mantra brings spiritual inspiration,’ and so from that time onward, Sangjenim’s disciples began to chant the Taeeulju Mantra in their meditation practice.

12These events accorded with Sangjenim’s words, “I shall establish the School of Great Learning at Gyeong-hak’s house. This school shall become the greatest in the world.”

Remain Inside Your House and Devote Yourself to Meditation
1In the spring of 1910, Sangjenim one day visited Nae-seong and commanded of him, “Remain inside your house, keep your hair unkempt, and devote yourself to meditation.”2Carrying out this command, Nae-seong untied his topknot, seated himself inside his room, and devoted himself solely to Taeeulju Mantra meditation.

Ahn Nae-seong’s Three-Year Life-and-Death Taeeulju Mantra Meditation
3After Nae-seong began his three-year Taeeulju Mantra meditation, strange sounds echoed throughout the village every night.4These sounds resembled the rumble of thunder, the clamor of a throng of people, the buzz of swarming bees, the roar of a gusting wind, or the bellow of a bull.5In addition to these strange sounds, someone in the landlord’s household fell ill, so Nae-seong and his mother were cast out and forced to relocate.6In every household they went, someone in the landlord’s family fell ill, so they were evicted after living in each rented room for only a brief time.7After Nae-seong and his mother had moved numerous times, they were able to rent a room in Sutongmok Village in Jeongeup County with much difficulty. As before, after Nae-seong and his mother had been in residence for only a short time, someone in the landlord’s family fell ill and the landlord demanded that Nae-seong depart.8Believing that he now had nowhere else to go, Nae-seong ignored the landlord and dedicated himself wholly to meditation.

9One day, Nae-seong returned to his room after eating his midday meal, only to discover that the landlord and his wife had moved outside his belongings and those of his mother and had dug up the floor covering.10However, Nae-seong disregarded everything, seated himself in the room, and simply chanted the Taeeulju Mantra.

Nae-seong Sees with His Spiritual Eye
11One day, the landlord connived to drive Nae-seong away by hiding his wife’s gold ring and a long silver hairpin and spreading a rumor that Nae-seong’s mother had stolen the jewelry. 12But Nae-seong discerned with his spiritual eye that the ring and the hairpin were secreted in the clothing chest of the landlord’s daughter-in-law, 13and so he said to the landlord, “Please check the inside of your daughter-in-law’s clothing chest. Everything should be on the bottom of the chest.”

14Having now experienced Nae-seong’s spiritual power, the landlord became afraid that his deed would be exposed, and he never again dared try to evict Nae-seong.

Nae-seong Is Tormented in Various Ways
1During this time, a rumor spread far and wide: ‘Nae-seong has devoted himself to meditation, leading to miracles.’2Envious of this, Gyeong-seok one day sought to disrupt Nae-seong’s meditation by hiring a young man of Sutongmok Village with the surname Bak, who led a group of ruffians against Nae-seong, tormenting him in various ways while demanding that he leave the village.3Nae-seong, however, remained steadfast, so the ruffians schemed and then dug up the floor of Nae-seong’s room around him and left.

What Has Been Done Suffices, so Let Him Live
4As Nae-seong was meditating that night, two tall commander spirits with big, glaring eyes came before him.5One of the commander spirits held a razor-sharp sword in his hand, and the other commander spirit bore a huge axe in one hand and held in the other hand an upside-down spear on which the young man named Bak was impaled from the crown of his head through his body.

6After the commander spirits prostrated themselves before Nae-seong, they asked, “Shall we banish him to the East Sea or the West Sea?” and awaited Nae-seong’s order.

7But Nae-seong chastised them, “What is the meaning of this? The young man acted as he did because he understood nothing, so how can we consider his actions a sin? Cease this once and for all.”

8Meanwhile, at the young man’s house, the young man suddenly lost consciousness, his complexion blackened, and his body convulsed in death throes.9His father hence rushed to Nae-seong’s dwelling in the middle of the night and desperately implored Nae-seong, “Teacher, my miscreant of a son is about to die. Kindly forgive him, and please by all means save him.”

10Nae-seong said, “What has been done suffices, so let him live.” At these words, the commander spirits pulled the spear from the young man’s body, prostrated themselves before Nae-seong, and departed.

11The next morning, the Bak father and son came before Nae-seong, apologized again and again, and then restored the floor.

The Actuation of the Taeeulju Mantra Meditation Dosu
12When rumors of these incidents spread far and wide, many of Sangjenim’s disciples, who had nowhere to turn after Sangjenim’s ascension, came to Nae-seong’s dwelling and began chanting the Taeeulju Mantra. 13From that time forth, Taeeulju Mantra meditation spread widely among Sangjenim’s disciples.

Gim Ja-hyeon’s Life of Spreading the Teachings Through Healings
1After Sangjenim’ ascension, Ja-hyeon carried out Sangjenim’s command, “Heal people without ever accepting money,”2and so he journeyed throughout the country, most often to Gyeongsang-do Province, performing his duty as a healer without accepting any compensation.

3During a healing, Ja-hyeon would offer a bowl of cheongsu, draw a talisman, and next to it write “Ji-gi-geum-ji-won-wi-dae-gang.”4Afterwards, being of one mind with heaven and earth, he would chant, “Ji-gi-geum-ji-won-wi-dae-gang,” within his mind and mark dots corresponding to the number of words that comprised his wish.5He would then place his hands on the sick and shout, “Ji-gi-geum-ji-won-wi-dae-gang,” then chant the Taeeulju Mantra.

6One day during a sojourn in Tongyeong, Gyeongsang-do Province, Ja-hyeon had an ominous dream portending that his mother might die,7so at dawn, he rushed to Guritgol Village, where he discovered that his mother was indeed perilously close to death.8Immediately, he carefully laid out a bed of clean straw in the middle of the yard and placed upon it a bowl of cheongsu that he himself had collected from a spring. He then offered four prostrations and prayer to Sangjenim with the sincerest of devotion,9and he afterward drew a talisman and placed it near the head of his bedridden mother. When the next day arrived, his mother rose to her feet as if she had never been ill.

10Ja-hyeon offered a prostration to his mother and said, “Mother, I am sorry. I must take my leave once again because the sick await me.” He then set out on his journey.

TAEMONIM’S FIRST HOUSEHOLD: The Daeheung-ri Dojang in Jeongeup County
The Founding of Taemonim’s Dojang
1In October 1911, after these arrangements had been completed, Taemonim summoned all the disciples who had directly served Sangjenim.2The gathered disciples were astounded and awed by Her divine power.
3At this time, Taemonim wielded Her spiritual authority to inaugurate the Center of Dao Authority and Governance, then declared the founding of Her dojang. 4Sangjenim’s disciples, who had been lost and uncertain what to do since Sangjenim’s ascension, unequivocally reaffirmed their resolve and began to follow Taemonim.

5Taemonim designated Cha Gyeong-seok’s house in Daeheung-ri Village as the dojang and had the disciples journey in every direction to spread Sangjenim’s teachings.

The Taeeulju Mantra Resounds Continually Throughout the Southern Regions
6This constituted the beginning of the organized movement to spread Sangjenim’s Supreme Dao of Mugeuk in Joseon, and throngs of people began to gather and became followers.7After three years, the Taeeulju Mantra was resounding continually throughout the Jeolla-do, Chungcheongnam-do, and Gyeongsangnam-do provinces, as well as throughout all the southwestern islands of Joseon.

* dojang.  도장 (道場). ‘The place where dao is practiced.’ It is also the focal point of carrying out ‘dao governance,’ which generally entails the enterprise of spreading the teachings and preparing for the salvation of humanity during the Autumn Gaebyeok. 


[When Gaebyeok Strikes in the Times to Come]
1In the presence of many disciples, Taemonim revealed, “In the future, there will be a gaebyeok of heaven and earth.2In the times to come, the sangssireum showdown will spill over, and the thirty-eighth parallel will be swept away at that time. Few will survive.”

3Taemonim also said to them, “You will suffer a world in which sea becomes land and land becomes sea.4When the seeds of humanity are culled, the disease shall strike down everyone in its path. It will be difficult to find even a single person in ten ri.”

The Taeeulju Mantra Must Roll Around Your Mouth at All Times
5Taemonim warned Her disciples, “If you have not cultivated and purified your mind with the utmost of resolve, how can you hope to survive the harvesting of the seeds of humanity?6Chant the Taeeulju Mantra countless times. The Taeeulju Mantra must roll around your mouth at all times of night and day, even while you eat and work.”

[The Taeeulju Mantra Shall Save People from Diseases]
1One day, Taemonim proclaimed, “In the future, the world shall be overturned by the disaster of disease. 2Unknown diseases of all kinds will break out. Before the catastrophic disease bursts forth, erysipelas and smallpox will strike first.3When smallpox begins to spread, you shall survive only by chanting the Taeeulju Mantra.”

4Taemonim also declared, “When the catastrophic disease strikes, corpses will be disposed of using pitchforks.5At that time, you shall revive the dead by chanting the Taeeulju Mantra as you travel from place to place, treading upon corpses.”

6She also revealed, “After myriad diseases strike, the world shall turn to Joseon.”

[The Taeeulju Mantra Embodies Spiritual Power and the Immense Power of Dao]
1Taemonim often instructed the disciples, “Chant the Taeeulju Mantra countless times.2The Taeeulju Mantra is a mantra for cultivating your true mind, so the more you chant the Taeeulju Mantra, the deeper your mind will become.”

3She also revealed, “You will be inspired with spiritual power and the power of creation-transformation only if you faithfully chant the Taeeulju Mantra.”

Desperate Circumstances and the Sole Means of Survival at the Time of Gaebyeok
1Taemonim revealed, “In the future, the mysterious disease will first strike the shores of Gunsan.2This mysterious disease will spread so rapidly that there will not be a moment to seek medicine and the falling of the dew from blades of grass will seem slow.”

3She also said, “Many diseases will strike, culminating in one ultimate disease—it is the ordinary people who shall die, and the practitioners of dao who shall live.4Keep your mind righteous and faithfully chant the Taeeulju Mantra, for this is the sole pathway to refuge.”

Chant the Taeeulju Mantra to Save People Throughout the World
1Taemonim declared, “The Taeeulju Mantra is a prayer to heaven and earth, the mantra that shall save people throughout the world at the time of gaebyeok.2When the catastrophic disease strikes at the coming of the time, chant the Taeeulju Mantra constantly to save numerous people throughout the world.”

3She also revealed, “Hoom-chi hoom-chi in the Taeeulju Mantra is a plea to the spirits of heaven and earth for salvation.”
